Feeling hungry like the wolf? Well, if you happen to be in the financial quarter of Leeds city centre, then you and your wolf pack might just be in luck. Having opened on St Paul’s Street in 2015, the Italian street food deli has acquired a dedicated, cult following, looking for something a bit different to the norm when the clock strikes 12. I dropped in midday on the hottest Friday in Leeds all year to see what all the fuss was about.
As someone who’s had plenty of Italian food over the years, I was curious to see how the much-loved cuisine translated into street food. In fact, the concept is really quite simple. Served in a similar style to Subway, you pick from a range of piada, pizza or focaccia, and then add a selection of meats, vegetables and sauces into the mix.
However, as far as comparisons to Subway go, that’s where they end. The steak, chicken, and various cuts of meat are all of a much higher standard, and prepared fresh on-site throughout the day.
I opted for the Steak Parmesan Alfredo Piada, which by far the most tempting offering to me. Consisting of a hand-rolled Italian wrap, it was filled with chargrilled British steak, spaghetti, and delicious Parmesan alfredo sauce.
I added some salami, cheese red onion and hot sauce to give it an extra kick, which went down a storm. Just don’t do as I did, and attempt to open the wrap to take a few snaps for Instagram. Before I knew it, manager Ash was at my table helping me assemble my deconstructed piada. Schoolboy error, indeed.
Across the table, my companion was enjoying the Spicy Beef Piada, which packed plenty of flavour, whilst not being hot enough to scare anyone away. Washed down with San Pellegrino Sparkling Orange juice, Wolf was the perfect cure given I’d had two nights on the tiles, followed by an early alarm for work.
This cool, unpretentious deli joint has got Italian street food all sewn up, and is an ideal spot for anyone on the hunt for good, hearty lunch grub with a twist. A neck of the woods well worth checking out, next time you’re hungry, Wolf might just be able to satisfy your animal instinct.
