Located in the heart of North Yorkshire in the traditional market town of Helmsley, The Feversham Arms is a luxury hideaway, designed to help guests retreat, relax and indulge, whilst sampling their famous Yorkshire hospitality.

Our  travel writer, Rachel McAlley spent a very relaxing day in the picturesque award-winning market town of Helmsley, nestled in the North Yorkshire Moors, at the stunning Feversham Arms Hotel and Verbena Spa.

The day began with coffee and hot chocolate for Rachel and her guest in the Feversham Arms Hotel lounge in front of the open fire.  This was a great opportunity to catch up with emails, make a few phone calls, and wind down before turning off all technology. Weekends can be busy with tourists in Helmsley, yet The Fev, as it’s effectionately known to the locals, is a gloriously calm and tranquil hotel amidst such a busy town.

The quaint and unassuming Verbena Spa, set at the back-right of the hotel with a welcoming entrance and comfy chairs at the spa reception were a wonderful site to behold from the outside hustle and bustle.

The Verbena Spa check-in team were extremely helpful in explaining about spa facilities, treatment bookings, and the delicious looking lunch menu.  Treatments were confirmed, timings were given, and the lunch order placed, it was time to get ready to seriously relax. The changing rooms are small, but perfectly formed, and the lockers all hold a towelling robe and flip flops, plus they each have a grand locker key, which is yours for the duration of your visit.

Walking through the lounge, filled with large and luxurious sofas, armchairs with plump cushions and woollen throws it was nice to see both men and women relaxing in their robes whilst reading the papers and magazines. The lounge is a lovely quiet retreat, ideal for resting between using the aromatherapy room or saunarium and having a treatment. We walked past each pretty treatment room and into the spa itself before embarking on the salt inhalation chamber to clear the sinuses!  After the salt chamber we opted for a relaxing foot spa, where we could cool down from the salt heat.

After our foot spa we took the decision to go for a swim in the outdoor heated pool.  It was a very chilly January morning with a little snow on the ground, but the pool was lovely.  We successfully managed around 20 lengths of the outdoor swimming pool before the Jacuzzi hot tub called out to us. Whilst in the hot tub, which looks over the Feversham Arms cottage terraces, and swimming pool, we entered a blissful heat experience and realised that our shoulders had fully relaxed!  It was heavenly.

Back inside, the sauna and the monsoon shower beckoned, then we headed to the lounge for a 15-minute chill out before lunch.  Lunch was served in the Verbena Spa bar area, we had Fish & Chips and a Roast Beef Ciabatta both came with a glass of Champagne, and we helped ourselves to the complimentary iced tea.  Lunch was delicious, and the chips were perfect in every possible way!

All too soon it was mid-afternoon and time for individual treatment sessions with the beauty therapists.  Rachel took a Temple Spa Drift-away Full Body Massage and her guest took a Deluxe Jessica Pedicure, both treatments were excellent and were taken in wonderfully calming treatment rooms.  Coffee was next to be enjoyed in the spa lounge post-treatment and then it was time to head for the shower, get dressed and depart the spa. A wonderful day was had at The Feversham Arms Verbena Spa.  This hotel really is the perfect location to spend a day of relaxation.
